Isn’t it amazing that there were maps long before this world looks the way we know it today? The world maps have been created a long time ago, and the thing that fascinates the people all over the world is the way that people were able to create them even though they didn’t have the technology that we are using today. That proves that we have always been smart and resourceful. The ancient Babylonians are responsible for the first world maps.
Back in 1930, in Iraq the world’s first map has been discovered and some say that it is 3000 years old. It is hard to tell whether or not this is really the world’s first map, but one thing is for sure, it is definitely the oldest one. After the Babylonians, many cultures all over the world started drawing their own world maps, and as the years were passing by, the maps were getting bigger and more detailed, and that explains all the strange things on some of the older maps, like sea monsters or ships on the ocean part of the map.
In most of the cases, when it comes to the historic maps, you can see three parts of the map: Asia, Europe, and on some maps, you can see that Jerusalem is in the center of the world map. Also, during the middle ages, people were drawing Anglo-Saxon, Christian, Indian, Native American and tribal maps… The Chinese were always one step ahead, which means that their maps were the best. Their advanced techniques were much better than those used in Europe, Asia or America, and that is why their world maps from that period of time look much more interesting.
Back then, the first continent to continent trading began, and that is where Chinese world maps helped a lot. There were many important details 
which you couldn’t find on other world maps, and that is one of the reasons traders from all over the world were using their maps. Most of the maps were drawn flat, but today it is not that hard to find a round map and one of the first ones is Martin Behaim Globe from 1492. Since the Christopher Columbus didn’t go to that famous journey, there is no America on the globe.
The good thing about the ancient world maps is that today with a little help from the technology, we can easily recreate them in details and find out how the world looked like so many years and centuries ago. Many people use the replicas of the first maps as decoration for their homes, and you have to admit that it is always nice to see a good old map on the wall. It makes you feel fascinated since you can understand the world and its development a little bit better and see how the whole process of development looked like.
